Experts estimate that 90% of all headaches are
caused from tension and only 6% are migraines. Recurring headaches
may be a sign of underlying health problems or possible disease.
Many people who suffer frequent headaches may be experiencing
allergic reaction to foods such as wheat, chocolate, or monosodium
glutamate (MSG) or sulfites found in a wide variety of processed
foods. Health problems such as bruxism (teeth grinding), hypertension,
hypoglycemia, irritable bowel syndrome, spinal subluxation,
and arthritis affecting the muscles, are possible situations
that can perpetuate headache pain.
Most types of headaches respond to bodywork
techniques. A responsible bodyworker/massage therapist will
ask clients if they have consulted their doctor to determine
the source of their headaches. This is often helpful, especially
in the case of migraine headaches, where a combination of
nutritional supplements and drugs may be appropriate in addition
to bodywork.
Headaches of all types including migraines have
trigger points that relate to nervous
system impulses and buildup of metabolic wastes in the tissues.
Most of these headaches can be relieved in five to ten
minutes by utilizing a few simple home-self care techniques
that are demonstrated and easily learned in a few minutes.
In most cases these techniques abate or erase headaches faster
than any medication and are more dependable.
